Description

Teyyam is part of native religion of North Kerala, that consists of various rituals, other performances, verbal expressions etc. Once in a year teyyam performance are being conducted in shrines and house holds in which the performer put make-up and costumes of concerned deity and invoke the deity for its appearance in the sword kept on ‘Peetha’. (A kind of wooden stool for ritual purposes). Through series of rituals the ‘Sakti’ of the deity is transferred to the body of the performer and he himself becomes the deity and he is able to console the devotees who approach him with various requests. There are around 300 deities, who got the status of teyyam and each of them get performances in different shrines, definitely with some textual change. Teyyam is unique in the sense that each deity has its own myth, ritual performances, facial make-up, costumes, head-gear, dance pattern etc. The duration of the performance in a shrine may vary from shrine to shrine, 2 days to 7 days. Serious researches and studies are undertaken by individuals and institutions in this field, still various phases of teyyam such as social, political, religious, artistic and communication are to be exploited.
This work shop is an attempt to introduce Teyyam to scholars in different academic disciplines and those who are interested in native/local culture. And more over it is to promote folklore tourism which is an emerging branch in tourism in which tourists, those who are interestedto know various expressions of the folk/people in its original context get an opportunity to watch teyyam and to discuss in detail. Therefore, as a joint venture Centre for Folklore Studies,University of Calicut and Folklore Fellows of  Malabar (Trust) decided to organize a 7 days international work-shop on teyyam during April 2010 at Kannur, Kerala, India.
