Website:
http://mobiletechnologies2010.wordpress.com/
When:
08 Feb 2010 - 09 Feb 2010

Description

Mobile devices are pervasive and an integral part of social rituals and routines in the urban environment. They are an ubiquitous presence in both public and private places. This symposium directly addresses contemporary urban experience and invites papers that investigate the design potentials, constraints and complexities of our engagement with technology in the urban environment.

This symposium addresses the following considerations:

•    How does our use of mobile technology effect our occupation and engagement with urban space?

•    How do we design for and within these conditions?

•    What are the possibilities (design, technological, experiential and cultural) of Hertizian space for designing the spatial and temporal features of urban space?

•    How does our use of legacy technologies and retrofitting effect our occupation of urban space?

•    How do personalised infrastructures or mobile devices shift our engagement with urban space?

The session will be loosely based around the following topics:

  • Sentience in the City – surveillance and security
  • Mapping the Visible and Invisible – visualising networks, motion and affect, Hertzian space architectures
  • You are here – GPS and Digital Maps
  • Locative media interventions
  • Making territories – placemaking, occupation, places, nonplaces and mobile technology
  • Urban Palimpsests and technology – retrofitting, imaginaries, memories
  • Dissent through mobile technology
  • Connectedness – bringing ‘there’ here
